Making the Invisible Visible

My career as an artist began in 1960 with a pen and ink drawing of a clump of birch trees at
our summer cottage. Since then I have gone through many changes. In those early days I tried
to depict things just as I saw them. I attempted to draw or paint things as I knew or imagined
them to be. Being trained in science, however, I knew something of the unseen forces which
make the world go round, and this knowledge wrestled to the ground all the things my eyes
insisted upon seeing. The world of appearances simply had to give way!

As the world continues to invent increasingly sophisticated technology, our universe opens
outward and inward, and we are re-made in the process. Nothing can be the same again. For
the last 25 years I have explored aspects of nature which are invisible to the naked eye. With
the help of powerful microscopes I spent 12 years painting the dazzling world of crystals.
Then I learned that invisible energy fields could be captured by means of Shlierian, InfraRed,
Thermographic and Kirlian photographic methods. The images I discovered were startling to
say the least, so I felt compelled to paint them.

When photographs taken through giant radio telescopes became readily available as source
material, I embarked on a plan to paint large canvases of galaxies and nebulae, and spent the
next five years capturing the luminous beauty of outer space.

I have since learned that every discovery seems to lead to an even greater mystery, so there can
be no running out of ideas. But if I ever do run dry, it will be simply because I haven’t looked
hard enough.

1960-1968 Works on paper; water colours, India inks and mixed media which include the
“Mathematical Mosaics” and graphic art designs.

1968-1971 “The Architecture of Fantasy”; 15 paintings of visionary architecture.
“Fantasy Series”; Subjects out of my imagination which become increasingly geometric until
such paintings as “ Rainbow Bubble” and “Science Fiction” are created.

1972-1977 “Geometrics; the large painting “Terra Geodesica” is the bridge between my
fantasy subjects and the geometrical canvases which follow. “Golden Power Ellipse”  is
partially computer generated from the Golden Power Ellipse, an equation I formulated.

1973-1985 “Micro-Art Series” reflects twelve years of work. It is representational art which
depicts magnified view of crystals as revealed through photomicrography, This series of
paintings also includes two octograms “The Snowflake” work is six feet square and arranges
thousands of crystals in an eightfold symmetrical structure. The masterpiece of the series is
“Amino Acid DL Isoleucine” which was begun in 1979 and finished in 1985.

1986-1988 “Invisible Worlds” is a series of canvases which portray invisible energy fields
through the aid of Kirlian, Shlierian and Infra Red photography.

1989-1991 “Enchanted landscapes” is a series of paintings of mysterious inner spaces.

1992-1998  May I have the Envelope, Please” is a playful look at a mundane object. The
common envelope is painted in many different styles, techniques and palettes.

During the same period I painted “Galaxies of Light”; 12 canvases depicting galaxies and
nebulae in deep space.

Collaborated works with my wife Mara show another side to my artistic sense. I design and
Mara paints.

Miniatures I have also created many miniatures in a myriad of styles.

The Horsehead Nebula is part of the Galaxy Series.
